Since then, Maria has also served as my presidential advisor for science and technology policy, and she will continue to do so. I write to share important changes in the leadership of our research enterprise – two steps I believe will advance MIT’s interests in shaping science and technology policy and in helping our faculty achieve their research goals, in part by easing the burden of research administration. A. Griswold Professor of Geophysics, who now serves as MIT’s presidential advisor for science and technology policy. Waitz says he’s eager to dive in and work to identify ways to help MIT’s prolific research engine run more smoothly. Waitz, who is also the Jerome C. Hunsaker Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics, brings deep knowledge of MIT to the position.
Department of Facilities
The instruments in the facility form part of the Center for Geochemical Analysis (CGA), which comprises six instrument-oriented facilities. The microprobe facility serves a broad spectrum of research scientists at MIT, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), neighboring universities, academic institutions and the industry. The Space Propulsion Laboratory (SPL) features state-of-the-art experimental facilities that complement our educational and research programs.
Environment, Health, & Safety (EHS) Office
DMSE’s shared laboratory facilities include spaces and equipment for teaching, research, experimentation, and manufacturing and are available to the MIT Community. The Structural Biology Core Facility is open to the entire MIT community in structural biology and provides access to state-of-the-art equipment for X-ray crystallography. I extend my deep appreciation to Dan for taking on this responsibility; in a long career defined by energetic dedication to our community, this stands as just the latest example of his selfless willingness to step up in service to MIT. Since earning his PhD from Caltech, Ian has spent his career here, rising to lead both his own department – AeroAstro – and eventually the School of Engineering, a role in which he launched thriving programs from Sandbox to Beaverworks.
MIT Health is an accredited ambulatory care center serving the health and wellness needs of the MIT community. We conduct more than 100,000 visits annually and are proud to continue a tradition of caring for the Institute community that spans more than a century. Our clinical offerings encompass multiple specialties, including dental, eye, adult primary care, pediatric primary care, mental health, obstetrics and gynecology, and sports medicine. We provide occupational and employee health services, community wellness programs, and seven-day-a-week urgent care. We sponsor the MIT Student Health Insurance Plan (MIT SHIP) in partnership with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts.
Request for an advance of internal funds or a lease of capital equipment
The Office of Campus Planning supports the MIT mission by serving as stewards of the evolving physical campus and providing services that guide and inform campus strategy and transformation. Through an inclusive and collaborative process, establishing and managing a service center mit office of the vice president for research the office pursues the continuing creation of campus spaces that sustain and inspire the exceptional community at MIT. - The central research administration units in OVPR work with each other, DLCI administrators, and other offices at MIT to provide a seamless research experience tailored to each individual project, while simultaneously supporting large-scale initiatives at MIT.
- The BioMicro Center was founded as the core biofabrication and microarray processing facility at MIT, offering a wide range of genomic services to researchers.
- Sometimes the structure is portrayed as a matrix, with the departments being the columns and the lab and center being the rows.
- Through the Research Council, we strive to enhance the communication between the rows of the matrix to enable laboratories having compatible areas of expertise to ease the seamless interaction across laboratory and center boundaries.
Our clinical services promote the translation of basic science and engineering advances into patient-oriented research, and ultimately into clinical practice. The Office of the Vice President for Research has overall responsibility for research administration and policies related to research at the Institute. The Institute is committed to responsible and ethical conduct of research and stewardship of sponsored funds. Our commitment is reflected in many of our policies and procedures, which serve the dual purpose of expressing MIT’s core values and promoting our compliance with applicable laws and regulations. Canizares is an authority on high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy and plasma diagnostics of cosmic sources including supernova remnants, X-ray binaries, active galactic nuclei, and quasars. He led the development of the Chandra High-Resolution Transmission Grating Spectrometer on NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory.

And, he spearheaded projects to expand professional development opportunities for graduate students, created the MIT Undergraduate Advising Center, worked to significantly expand undergraduate financial aid, and broadly expanded support for graduate students. The MIT Department of Facilities creates, cares for, and powers MIT’s physical environment, and moves people and materials around the campus. As stewards of the campus, MIT Facilities builds, maintains, and optimizes the Institute’s structures and grounds, implementing high-performance solutions to maximize campus sustainability. Facilities provides the utilities and services necessary to advance the educational and research activities of the Institute.
Fab.nano is the shared fabrication facility at MIT where users carry out controlled processing of micro- and nanoscale structures. Our advanced cleanroom facilities offer capabilities ranging from lithography, etching, and deposition to diffusion, wet processing, and packaging. State-of-the-art toolsets are assembled for dimensional science of surfaces and interfaces, advanced imaging spectroscopy (ambient, Cryo and in-vivo), and nanoscale analysis that will promote technological innovation and serve as a hub for scientists with widely different expertise. Characterization.nano provides a set of shared focus facilities where users can carry out controlled characterization of micro, nano, and sub-nanoscale structures. The HTS team also engages in technology-focused research and development projects with collaborators, such as developing novel cell models, assays, and devices.

As a result of changes to federal requirements, MIT will now require all “covered individuals” engaged in federally funded research to complete research security training by December 31, 2025. Earlier deadlines apply for NIH, NSF, and DOE proposals, awards, and modifications, and for any other agencies that set training deadlines this fall. We have some MIT-unique systems too, including nanocalorimeters, a positron annihilation spectrometer (PAS), a particle accelerator, and multiple transient grating spectroscopy (TGS) systems.
- The W.M. Keck Biological Imaging Facility provides scientists with the equipment, training and support necessary to generate and interpret microscopic images.
- Seeking new challenges, in 2017 Ian became vice chancellor, a new position created to oversee both undergraduate and graduate education.
- The X-ray Diffraction Facility offers full single crystal X-ray structure determination at two wavelengths (Cu or Mo), including the determination of absolute configuration of chiral molecules from anomalous scattering.
- Cindy and I agreed that there should be no question or confusion about the importance of this position and so decided to return to the existing title, to make clear that the VPR is the Institute’s senior research officer.
- Services include light and epifluorescence microscopy, laser scanning and spinning disk confocal microscopy, deconvolution-based microscopy, total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy, super-resolution microscopy, and high-throughput fluorescent slide scanning.
The group engages faculty, students and staff in research focused on the relationship between design computing and physical output used for design representation and reflection. Members of the MIT community can consult ORCD on research computing resources, including the on-campus resources ORCD enables and supports. From AI to climate, biotech to chip manufacturing, it’s increasingly clear that human flourishing depends on timely, farsighted science and technology policy. MIT has a natural duty to help inform and lead this work, and Maria’s scientific stature, DC experience and wide-ranging connections across academia, industry, foundations and government are a perfect match for the challenge. The Support team, in collaboration with business partners across the Institute, provides support, education, and resources for the processes, policies, and best practices in research administration.
